support our troops.... and stop making us pay even more

Ok, this post is going to probably strike a nerve for some people so I will warn you:
This is what I think and how I feel. Please respect that.

Anyway- Have y’all heard about the proposed TRICARE fee increase that Obama sent to Congress? Well let me break it down for you.
TRICARE is the healthcare plan(s) available to military members and retired members. It is the most affordable healthcare out there and for the most part it’s pretty good. Vincent and I were on it while he was Active Duty and are on the retired TRICARE now. Our medication is free, visits don’t have co-pays, and we don’t have to pay for expensive testing. The quarterly payments are affordable and since we live 10 minutes from Fort Jackson, it made since to get it while he is in school.
In what I assume is an attempt to make TRICARE unaffordable and force veterans to go to Obamacare, Obama has proposed a fee increase for TRICARE enrollees and a massive budget cut. I mean we are talking in the BILLIONS.
Now I understand that our country is in a lot of debt and I won’t pretend like I fully understand every aspect (I mean heck! I’m married to an accounting major – I let him worry about money) but at the same time why on earth would Congress and our President deem it OK to take away from those who literally have risked their lives to protect this country!? It is BEYOND me. I mean why not cut the welfare budget? Increase taxes on the 1%? Oh HEY CONGRESS! WHY DON’T YOU GET PAID WHAT OUR MILITARY DOES! Or for that matter, let’s see you go into a hostile territory, wearing full gear (weighing upwards of 40lbs) in 140 degree weather, while fearing for your life, and being away from your family for months and months. You don’t deserve your obscene paycheck but you bet your little butt the military does.  Yet, you have no problem taking away from them and their families. Gr.
Why doesn’t Congress stand up for the little guy!?
Yes- I’m married to a Marine (and for those who are thinking “well didn’t he get out?” – yes but once a Marine, always a Marine) so my feelings may be a little more outlandish. I have had a family member fight in EVERY war in the country (and don’t argue, I have proof). My grandfathers are WW2 vets, I have 3 uncles that were in Vietnam, Vincent’s father was a Marine would did two separate year long deployments in Vietnam,  and a lot of friends that have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. It’s a subject close to me.
My grandpa and Vincent

Needless to say – I support our troops, I am proud to be an American, and God bless the families of those killed for my freedom. If you are offended by that statement you need to rethink living in the USA.
I'm glad that there is talk of exempting medically retired service members, active duty, and survivors of services members killed in action from the proposed TRICARE fee increase but it still makes me sick that our President is taking away so much from our military. I mean come one?! Fees tripling and quadrupling in the next 5 years!? That is nuts!
Please don’t get me wrong- I am so grateful for the VA and for the help we have received. Without the VA, Vincent wouldn’t be able to go to school for (basically) free. Without the VA we would not have been able to qualify for a home loan. Without the VA, Vincent would have gotten no monetary compensation for his injury or time served. Without the DOD, Vincent and I wouldn’t have been able to travel to St. Louis to see if he was a candidate for surgery to repair his nerve. I am grateful. What makes me mad is how unappreciated our vets are in terms of politics.
Because Vincent was medically retired, we might be exempt from the fee increase should Congress choose to exempt them.  I hope so. If not, by the time the fees go through the roof, Vincent will have graduated and we won’t be as reliant on his VA compensation.
In case you want to see what I am talking about (or to make sure I haven’t made up anything) check out these links:
I pray for Obama and Congress. I pray that they will make wise and informed decisions that will benefit us as a nation and not further their own agendas. I pray.
AGAIN: my intention was not to offend anyone but if you have something constructive to say please add. If you are going to be mean just don’t bother. My mama raised me to turn the other cheek, so I won’t respond to rude comments, but I will think rude thoughts about you and will probably tell my bestie (sorry mom!)

God bless our troops and God bless America.

feelin' crafty

The other day I was feeling crafty. It happens often. I just get this itching to make or do something DIY and I go in all gung ho. Then when I’m done I’m usually like, “well that rush didn’t last long.” ((insert sad face))
Anyway. I have been collecting glass jugs and jars for a while now to put on top of my kitchen cabinets. It’s a little all over the place but that’s ok- if I like a piece I buy it! I mean you can go to Marshalls or Ross and get some great glass for under 5 bucks! Rock on!
My mom showed me the painted milk jugs a while ago and never really got inspired… and then the other day I did. So I ran to TJ Maxx and bought two pieces of glass. Then I used regular ole paint ($0.67 a bottle!) to paint the insides. The mint green one of the left cost under $3 to buy and paint and the peach one was only $5. The two on the end are from time Vincent got me flowers :)

All I did was take the paint, add a little water so that it wasn't as think, and poured it in the vases. I had to shake and smack the paint around to make sure it coated all of it. I did use a small paint brush to touch up the tops.  (Please excuse the mess in the background).
I also wanted to make a fun candy dish. I saw this post on Pinterest and was like “oh fun!” Well the directions are in a different language and I don’t know how to change it so here’s my version….
-Buy those annoying little beads. I found mine at Hobby Lobby in the kids craft section.
-Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
-Use an oven-safe bowl (I used a small Pyrex bowl) and coat it with oil (I used veggie oil ;).
-Pour some of the beads in the bowl and simply press them down to get one layer of beads (trust me it’s easier than you think!).
-Place the bowl in the oven for 15 minutes.
-Remove and let cool. I will admit I am impatient so after about 5 minutes of cooling, I stuck with bowl under cool water.
Then viola! I was actually able to make three of them :) I have one on my desk at work and gave one to my sister and the other to a buddy at work.

Oh and bonus: I told Nanny about my new obsession with brooches so she gave me three of hers! Two are more recent (I think) and then one is an antique! (squeal!) Here’s the one I wore today.

And so you can see how an older tradition can be made modern, I have included the oh-so-tacky bathroom mirror photo (don’t judge!). I’m wearing a chambray shirt (which are pretty hot right now) that I got for $6 at Ross, black leggings (petite, $25 at Macy’s), brown belt from Francesca's for $20, and these awesome shoes my mom got me from Burks Outlet:

(And in case you are wondering, my cell phone case was $7 from TJ Maxx - I love me some TJ Maxx!!)Have a great weekend!!! I am shooting a wedding tomorrow so it's gonna be all good ;)

ridiculously photogenic guy - my take

Ok. So this guy named Zeddie was running in the Cooper River Bridge run down in Charleston and a photog snapped his photo. It went viral.

Yes, he is very good looking. Yes, its impressive that he is running, sweating, and looking cute all in one swoop.

But ya see here – I have my own ridiculously photogenic man. This photo was taken on August 30, 2007 during the MOT Run at a Marine Corps Boot Camp graduation. It was a 5K and this was taken right as the were coming to the "finish."

((Sorry they are blurry. Will try and fix that...))

See the arrow pointing to the ONLY guy smiling in the formation? Yup- that’s my main squeeze.

Here is a close up:

Did I mention I have TWO photos of him looking all happy to see me?!

You can imagine how I freaked out after I saw it. I mean heck, I hadn’t seen him in THREE months with only letters to communicate. How lucky am I that when my man came on running by he was smiling like he won the lottery!? Pretty darn lucky.

Anyway, that Zeddie guy is pretty good lookin’ but if you were to ask me my husband totally kicks his butt ;)

He was 18 in the boot camp photos and at 22 he is just getting better and better looking :)
I mean LOOK AT HIM!!!

(Please excuse my awkward smile, I mean it’s so hard to take a photo next to that hot man of mine ;)

JUST FOR FUN: (please note: his hair is super short because he was at boot camp.
Please reference the beautiful wavy locks in the above photo)

oh bethenny

We all have those guilty pleasures- whether it be some kind of dessert, an expensive accessory, or a TV show. I do.
I love Bethenny Frankel in her show Bethenny Ever After (Bravo Monday at 10pm).
Sure she can be a little risqué and sometimes quite vulgar but I love her. She is a tell it like it is, no nonsense, take the bull by the horns type girl. She came from a tough upbringing and has made it all on her own. I think she is hilarious and says what other people are thinking but afraid to say. Sure she can be a bit neurotic but can’t we all?
I love her.
I see a lot of myself in her and I wish I had the balls, yes balls - don’t get offended – to always stay true to myself and take everything in stride.
I love her husband Jason too and don’t get me started on how cute I think her daughter Bryn it. Jason is SO much like Vincent it makes me laugh. Some of the similarities are good and others not so much. As much as I would L-O-V-E to write down everything they have in common, I know Vincent sometimes reads what I write and I wouldn’t want to embarrass him (Jason would totally feel the same… ;)
Anyway, I love her show and her. And if you don’t, that’s totally fine – I just wanted to share ;) I mean if I literally laugh out loud multiple times during one show it’s a keeper.
She’s got a talk show coming out and I am TOTALLY going to DVR it!
Oh! On another note- who watches GCB?! HILARIOUS! <3 it
